Pricing and availability
Day rates, weekly rates, deposits, and keeping your calendar honest.
Pricing on Rental has three levers: the day rate, the week rate, and the deposit. Availability is a fourth lever that's easy to forget — a blocked day can't be booked, and that's the point.
Day and week rates
The day rate is the default price for a 24-hour rental. The week rate applies automatically to rentals of seven days or more. A useful starting point is 3–5% of the item's replacement cost per day:
| Item | Replacement cost | Suggested day rate |
|---|---|---|
| Pressure washer | $400 | $20–25 |
| Mirrorless camera + lens | $2,400 | $80–110 |
| Cargo trailer | $2,000 | $75–95 |
| Paddleboard | $900 | $35–50 |
These are starting points, not rules. Check what similar items near you charge, and adjust after your first few rentals.
Deposits
A deposit is a hold placed on the renter's card for the duration of the rental. If the item comes back damaged, you can claim against the deposit with photo evidence. Most owners set deposits between one and two day rates; high-value items sometimes go higher.
Weekend pricing
Many owners charge a premium on Fridays and Saturdays. Enable weekend pricing on a listing to add a percentage surcharge for rentals that include those days — 10–20% is common.
Keeping the calendar honest
- Block dates proactively. Any day the item is unavailable — repairs, vacations, personal use — should be blocked.
- Same-day bookings can be turned off if you need lead time to prepare the item.
- Advance notice sets how far ahead a rental must start, from 0 hours up to a week.
Note: Changing a price never affects bookings already confirmed — those are locked at the rate the renter agreed to.
